My tools of the trade

Marketing Tools for Small Business: The Stack I Actually Use

I’ve tested a lot of marketing tools since 2009. These are the ones I run my own four brands on and recommend to clients, including the AI tools that do the heavy lifting. Skip years of trial and error and start with a stack that works together.

Disclosure: some links on this page are affiliate links. If you buy through them, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend tools I use or have used in my own business.

What Marketing Tools Does a Small Business Need?

Most small businesses need five kinds of marketing tools: a fast, well-hosted website, an SEO tool to get found, an email platform to follow up, a social scheduler to stay visible, and an AI assistant to create content in your voice. Pick one good tool in each category and connect them, instead of collecting dozens you never use.

How to Choose Your Marketing Tools

Start with the job, not the tool. Decide what you need done (get found, follow up, stay visible), then pick one tool per job.

Check the track record. Look for strong reviews, regular updates and real support. I once built on a theme that stopped getting updates and had to start over. You don’t want that.

Pay for what matters. Free versions are great for testing. For the tools your business runs on, paid plans usually mean better support when you need it.

Make them work together. The magic isn’t any one tool. It’s a website, email, social and AI that pass work to each other so your marketing keeps moving without you doing it all.

Work smarter, not harder.

Marketing Tools FAQs

A fast, well-built website you own. Every other tool, from SEO to email to social, sends people there. Next is an email platform, because your list is the audience no algorithm can take away.

No. Many of these tools have free plans or trials. Start free, then upgrade the tools your business depends on most, like hosting and email.

I use Claude at the center of my content system, paired with a brand voice guide so it writes like me. Around it: Descript for video, ElevenLabs for voice, Pictory for turning posts into videos, ToastyAI for repurposing podcast episodes and Typeset for ebooks and lead magnets. See my AI tools guide for more.

It depends on where your audience is. I use Tailwind for Pinterest and Instagram, and SmarterQueue when you want your best evergreen posts recycled automatically across several profiles.

Some are. If you buy through an affiliate link, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend tools I use or have used in my own business.
